Worker bees produce tiny scales of wax from specialised glands on their abdomen. These scales are softened and shaped by the bees to create the hexagonal honeycomb that forms the internal structure of the hive.
But how does that wax eventually become the beeswax used in candles, furniture polish and other natural products?

Where does beeswax come from?
Beeswax comes from worker honey bees.
Worker bees have four pairs of wax-producing glands on the underside of their abdomen. These glands secrete wax which hardens into tiny flat scales when exposed to air.
The bees remove the scales, manipulate and soften them using their mouthparts and gradually build them into honeycomb.
Why do bees make beeswax?
Honey bees don't make wax for humans — they make it because honeycomb is essential to the colony.
The familiar hexagonal cells provide space for storing honey and pollen as well as raising developing bees.
Honeycomb is therefore effectively the architecture of the hive.
How do bees turn honey into beeswax?
Producing beeswax requires considerable energy.
The bees consume honey and use the energy derived from those sugars during wax production. The newly secreted wax starts as tiny scales before being shaped into comb.
This is one reason genuine beeswax is such a valuable natural material: producing it requires significant work by the bee colony.
Why is honeycomb hexagonal?
Honeycomb consists of hundreds or thousands of tightly packed six-sided cells.
The hexagonal structure provides an efficient way of creating a strong network of cells while making economical use of wax.
As bees work together, individual wax scales gradually become the familiar honeycomb structure found inside a healthy hive.
How does beeswax get from the hive to a block of wax?
Once beeswax has been responsibly collected from the hive, it can be separated from honey and other natural hive material.
The wax is normally melted and filtered to remove particles and impurities before being allowed to cool and solidify.

What colour is natural beeswax?
Natural beeswax is often yellow or golden, although its exact colour can vary.
The appearance can be influenced by the pollen, propolis and other natural material present in the hive as well as how the wax has subsequently been filtered and processed.
This variation is part of the character of a genuinely natural material.
Does beeswax smell like honey?
Natural yellow beeswax commonly has a mild, sweet aroma associated with honey and the hive.
It shouldn't necessarily smell strongly of honey, however. The scent can vary depending on the source, filtration and individual batch.
